Solutions to Combat the Risks of Erosion

With its diverse and rugged coastline exposed to the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, and the course of its rivers negatively influenced by topography and land use practices, Scotland is no stranger to river and coastal erosion.

In recent decades the natural course of erosion has been exacerbated by the effects of climate change, bringing extreme weather with concomitant threats like flooding.

This all means an ever-increasing number of private and public enterprises are looking for solutions to combat erosion, which threatens to undermine things like buildings, roads, rail networks and the land itself.

As a versatile and long-established firm of civil engineers based on the north east coast of Scotland with more than 30 years’ experience in this type of work Edward Mackay Contractor Ltd have successfully carried out numerous anti-erosion projects involving flood and wave defences.

Rock Armour – a Quick and Effective Defence

We’re familiar and practiced in the use of erosion defences like gabion baskets (rectangular wire baskets filled with stones), as well as timber or reinforced concrete groynes (long, narrow structures built into the sea or river to stop sand movement), but most of our clients concerned about erosion come to us because of our expertise in the supply and placement of rock armour.

Rock armour involves placing large quarried boulders – some weighing individually up to five tons – as a loosely packed barrier in front of a cliff, embankment or sea wall to absorb (rather than deflect) wave energy.

This method is seen as a very effective solution to protect coastlines and structures from erosion, and its cheaper than building revetments or sea walls.

Our Rock Armour experts have hauled and placed hundreds of thousands of tons of armour rock over the years, sourced from local quarries.

EDWARD MACKAY CONTRACTORS

Skilled Contractors for Expert Rock Placement

As an anti-erosion strategy rock armour is a sustainable and natural hard engineering erosion management solution that is preferable to building artificial structures in an attempt to control natural processes.

The boulders that make up the rock armour are not just transported to the site and dumped willy-nilly. Our skilled contractors know just how to place each individual boulder so they interlock together to dissipate wave energy or minimise flood risk as the case may be.

Our experts know the coastline intimately, and have unrivalled knowledge of coastal engineering, so there are few better qualified to handle the placement of amour rock.

That’s why we continue to be called upon to carry out Rock Armour projects for well-known clients, like those we have successfully completed for The Scottish Office, Highland Council, Network Rail, First Engineering, Strathmore Estate, Brora River Board, Helmsdale River Board, Gordonbush Estate, Kintradwell Estate and Lord Strathnaver, to name but a few.
