More than 50 years’ experience, coupled with the ability to innovate and meet a challenge, has earned our engineers a reputation for excellence. We take on tough infrastructure and groundworks schemes for local and regional councils, developers and national agencies across the Highlands of Scotland and never fail to deliver efficient, cost-effective solutions.
One of our biggest projects to date was working with principal contractors Balfour Beatty on the Beauly-Denny Transmission Line Project – one of the largest overhead line projects in Europe stretching more than 220 km with 600 towers to be placed in some extreme locations in the Highlands.
That project – with which we continue to be involved in reinstatement work – earned us an award for coming up with innovative options for accessing some of the steepest terrain on the project.

Receiving the Balfour Beatty award was an achievement of which we are immensely proud, but we haven’t been resting on our laurels since.
The team at Edward Mackay have since continued to cement our reputation for producing high quality works and high productivity levels, as evidenced by the fact that an increasing number of clients keep requesting our services for a variety of earthmoving and infrastructure schemes.
We’re not afraid to take on big heavy civil construction projects that focus on public infrastructure improvements in Scotland, working alongside a number of approved supply chain partners to supplement our internal workforce for specialist tasks when required.
All our projects, large and small, are managed from our Brora and Inverness offices, so we are “on the spot” when it comes to undertaking civil engineering contracts in Scotland, the Highlands and Islands.

Our multi-generational family-run business works according to some founding principles when it comes to successfully delivering on engineering projects.
Firstly, we have a policy of resourcing our contracts with directly employed staff and our own modern, company-owned and impeccably maintained plant. This diminishes the need for subcontracting and plant hire.
We’ve found that this approach gives us greater control of the works with regard to safety, quality, cost, timely completion and client satisfaction. It also allows us to respond swiftly to changing situations and be totally project focused, enabling all the issues to be properly addressed.
We’re also very mindful of the need to pass on our skills, experience and expertise – honed in the harsh conditions of the Highlands – to the young trainee engineers on our workforce, which we employ from the Inverness area.
