EDWARD MACKAY CONTRACTORS

Specialists in Onshore Windfarm Infrastructure

Scotland is leading the way in renewable energy, and here at Edward Mackay we’re pleased and proud to be playing our part in the transition away from fossil fuels.

Most of our electricity in Scotland comes from renewables, and we’re fully motivated to help it keep happening as one of Scotland’s leading specialist onshore windfarm infrastructure providers.

It all began back in 1996, when we were delighted to play an important part in the development of Scotland’s first wind farm on the Novar Estate near Alness on the slopes north of Glen Glass in Easter Ross.

We constructed access roads on the steep, hilly terrain to accommodate abnormal loads, turbine foundations, substation buildings and electrical infrastructure for the 300ha site. Our environmentally friendly techniques on delivering this project have since become the model on which the infrastructure for all Scottish windfarms is based, and we’re now recognised as experts in the field.

Management of Environmental Challenges

Since that first renewables project our involvement within the energy industry in Scotland has seen us undertaking civil engineering works associated not just with wind farms, but with the installation of power transmission lines and construction of electricity substations too.

Over the years we’ve amassed a great deal of experience – and consequent expertise – in managing the complex logistics involved in working over large expanses in remote Highland areas, often in unpredictable and harsh weather conditions.

We’ve also come to grips with working in environmentally sensitive locations, including designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) or Special Protection Areas (SPAs).

Whether we’re working in a protected area or not we are committed to minimising the impact of our engineering work on local ecosystems and wildlife – after all, there’s not much sense in installing renewable energy infrastructure at the expense of our natural heritage.

Quality Renewable Projects Delivered on Time

Along with all the experience our multi-skilled team at Edward Mackay Contractor Ltd has gained on various renewable energy projects, we have also put together a stable of modern, top of the range plant and equipment – which we maintain to a high standard – to resource our infrastructure projects.

Having a wide range of skills, knowledge and plant available means that we don’t have to sub-contract out any part of our renewable civil engineering work, although we do have a range of supply chain partners to call on to supplement our resources if they are required.

All our renewable energy infrastructure projects are managed from our bases in Brora and Inverness in the Highlands. We are extremely conscientious when it comes to controlling site safety and delivering on quality, cost, timely completion and client satisfaction.

With the Scottish Government having set a target to generate 50% of Scotland’s overall energy consumption from renewable sources by 2030, and to reach net zero by 2050, we have a lot of work still to do in this sector. All we can say is, “bring it on”!
